Building a linknetwork

I have 3 PR4 and 1 PR5 Website running (all with real content). At the moment I am thinking about getting some cheap domains from different providers (and hence different IPs), putting some simple content on them and linking them all between each other. Could this help increasing my PR and my SERPs? Or is this considered as real spamming, since the content I am thinking about to put up on this pages is not really.. well.. THAT useful for people but not total gibberish.
For example I would write down some text about Mercedes-Cars and link this to a Mercedes-related gallery on one of my "real" pages.
